# Asana alternative: how Prior compares

## Who each one suits

Asana suits you if you coordinate projects across a team and want several ways to see them. Its pages list list, board, timeline, calendar and Gantt views, goals, forms, reporting dashboards, custom fields and automations, with desktop apps for Mac and Windows and mobile apps for iOS and Android.

Prior suits you if you mostly plan your own work, alone or with a few people: tasks with a priority and a due date, habits and notes in one app, and a planner that places tasks in the free hours of your calendar. It has no iOS app yet. On an iPhone or iPad you open it in the browser.

## Where Asana goes further

- **Views and planning for teams.** Timeline and Gantt views show schedules and dependencies, and they come with Starter. Prior has a Kanban board and a calendar, and no Gantt chart.
- **Goals and reporting.** Goals connect work to objectives, and dashboards report on project data.
- **Forms and automations.** Forms turn requests into tasks, and automations are unlimited from Starter.
- **Custom fields.** You track budgets, priorities and other details in fields you define.
- **Scale and guests.** No seat limit on paid plans, free guests from Starter, and a long list of integrations.
- **An iOS app.** Asana lists one; Prior does not have one yet.

## What Prior does differently

Prior is built around one person's day. A task's priority and due date place it in the Eisenhower matrix, and the planner turns open tasks into blocks around your events. Habits, flashcards and a Focus timer sit in the same app. Your data lives on your device first, and the account keeps devices in sync. Any AI assistant can read and edit your tasks through Prior's MCP server, on every plan. Prior also has Scrum and Scrumban projects for small teams, with story points, Planning Poker and burn charts, on Pro.

## Switching from Asana

Prior does not have an Asana importer, but it reads Asana's CSV. In Asana, open the project, choose the **Project actions** menu, then **Export → CSV**. Asana exports one project per file. In Prior, open [Settings → Import](https://app.priortasks.com/settings/import), choose **Other** and add the file.

Prior picks up the columns it recognises by name: Name, Notes, Due Date, Tags (kept as labels in the description) and Parent Task, which makes sub-tasks. Map Project Name to **Project** in the preview, or the tasks arrive without a project. Prior does not read the completion date, so finished tasks arrive as open: untick them in the preview.
