# Estimate together with Planning Poker

> Run a Planning Poker table in a Scrum or Scrumban project. Everyone picks a card in secret, the cards turn over together, and the team saves the estimate.

Planning Poker is a way to estimate stories as a team. Each person chooses a card without seeing the others, then all the cards turn over at once, so nobody is swayed by the first number said out loud. When the cards differ, the highest and the lowest explain, and the team votes again or settles.

> [!pro] Planning Poker follows the owner's plan
> The **Planning Poker** tab exists in Scrum and Scrumban projects, and starting a session needs a project whose owner has Pro. Everyone in the project can then join, whatever their own plan. See [Choose Kanban, Scrum or Scrumban](https://priortasks.com/docs/agile/kanban-scrum-scrumban/).

## Start a session

Owners and editors start one. In Scrumban, first choose **Add a view** after the tabs, then **Planning Poker**; Scrum projects always have the tab.

1. On the **Planning Poker** tab, **Pick the stories**. Tasks without an estimate are already ticked, and quick chips pick the active or next sprint, tasks **Outside any sprint** or **All open tasks**.
2. Choose a deck: **Fibonacci**, **Modified Fibonacci** or **T-shirt sizes**. Prior remembers it on this device.
3. Choose **Start the game**. A session holds 1 to 50 tasks.

Every member gets a card, "Alex started Planning Poker", with **Join the table**. Viewers get it too.

## Play a round

1. The story sits in the middle of the table. Pick a card from your hand: click it, or type its value. Your card goes face down. Click it again to take it back before the reveal.
2. The host chooses **Reveal cards**. The host is whoever started the session, and the project owner can run the table too. The button shows "3 of 5 voted".
3. If everyone chose the same card, you see "Everyone agrees!". Otherwise the average and the range appear, and the lowest and highest cards are tagged.
4. The host chooses **Accept 5 points** to save the estimate on the task, **Re-vote** for a new round, or the pencil to pick another value. The table then moves to the next task still to decide.

When every task has an estimate, the table shows "Everything is estimated" with the total, and the host chooses **Finish session**.

## The decks

| Deck | Cards |
| --- | --- |
| Fibonacci | 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ?, coffee |
| Modified Fibonacci | 0, ½, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 40, 100, ?, coffee |
| T-shirt sizes | XS, S, M, L, XL, ?, coffee |

T-shirt sizes are worth 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 points. The question mark and the coffee break carry no points. An estimate above 13, or XL, offers to split the story: see [Split a story that is too big](https://priortasks.com/docs/agile/split-a-story/).

## Keyboard

Type a card to play it: `5`, `13`, `.5`, `xl`, `?` or `c` for coffee. <kbd>Enter</kbd> reveals, then accepts. <kbd>R</kbd> re-votes. <kbd>Backspace</kbd> takes your card back.

## Good to know

- **Viewers watch.** They see the table and "You are watching", but do not vote.
- **Playing alone.** In a project nobody else is in, the same table works solo, and **Accept** still saves the points. A solo session is not kept if you close Prior.
- **One session per project.** The **Session** button lists the tasks with their estimates and offers **Skip this task**, **Split this task** and **End session**. A session nobody touches for 12 hours closes.
- **Connection.** The table is frozen while you are offline. If the host leaves the project, any editor can run it.
