Prior asks you two questions, then gets out of the way. The whole setup takes about a minute, and you work with your own tasks from the first screen.

## The two questions

1. **What do you need help with?** Pick any of the goals, or none to keep it plain. Your answer decides which spaces appear in the menu.
2. **What do you have to do?** Write real tasks, as you would say them: "Call Lea tomorrow 3pm". Prior reads the date, the priority and the project as you type, and shows the date it understood under each task. Choose **See my day** when you are done, or **Skip for now**.

| Goal | Adds to your menu |
| --- | --- |
| Planning my days | Calendar |
| Building habits | Habits |
| Studying | Flashcards and Focus |
| Running projects | Projects and Notes |
| Keeping notes | Notes |
| Staying focused | Focus |

Today and All tasks are always there. You can add or remove the other spaces later in **Settings → General → Navigation**. Coming from another app? The capture screen links to the import, see [Import your data](https://priortasks.com/docs/getting-started/import-your-data/).

If you reload halfway, Prior comes back to the capture screen with your goals. People who join through an invitation see one welcome screen with the invitation instead, with no goals and no tutorial.

## Today, with the essentials

Your first week on [Today](https://priortasks.com/docs/getting-started/today-page/) is deliberately short: the quick-add field and your list. The **New task** and **Plan my day** buttons wait, and the day timeline and agenda only show once you have a calendar in your menu or events. Today shows everything after you finish three chapters of Discover or after seven days, whichever comes first.

A short guide starts by itself: **The basics**. A small bubble points at the real screen and moves on when you do the real thing.

1. Write a task, if you have none yet. Type it and press <kbd>Enter</kbd>.
2. Open a task and give it a day or a priority.
3. Check it off by clicking its circle. An **Undo** appears in case you changed your mind.

You can close the guide with its close button or <kbd>Esc</kbd>. It pauses, and [Discover](https://priortasks.com/docs/getting-started/discover/) offers to continue.

## After your first completed task

Prior asks once whether you want to make it a game: XP for what you finish, a pet to raise and weekly leagues. Your tasks stay the same either way. Accept it or choose **No thanks**, and change your mind any time. See [Calm or Game](https://priortasks.com/docs/game-mode/calm-or-game/).

## The rest of the day

- Open **Discover** at the bottom of the sidebar when you are curious. It has 15 short chapters, each at most three gestures.
- A one-line suggestion may appear at the bottom of Today when your own work calls for it, for example when you have many tasks and no project. It never comes back once you close or try it.
- Press <kbd>Cmd</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd> or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>K</kbd> to search and run commands. See [The command palette](https://priortasks.com/docs/getting-started/command-palette/).
- Toward the end of your working day, Today offers **Wrap up the day** to move what is left. See [Evening wrap-up](https://priortasks.com/docs/planning/evening-wrap-up/).

Nothing is lost if you skip a step. Everything in the setup is reachable later, and [Discover](https://priortasks.com/docs/getting-started/discover/) is always there.
