> Every place Prior uses AI, what it does there, what you keep control of, and which plan or key each one needs.

The assistant is one place where Prior uses AI. There are eleven more, each small and each in the screen where you need it. This page lists them all, so nothing runs that you did not know about.

In every case the AI proposes and you decide: a draft is shown for you to review before it is saved.

## The list

| Feature | Where | What it does | What it needs |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Assistant | **Prior AI** in the sidebar | Answers questions and proposes changes: [the assistant](https://priortasks.com/docs/prior-ai/assistant/) | Prior AI, your own key, or Codex |
| AI plan for today | **Today** | Suggests what to focus on today, with a reason and a start time for each. **Refresh plan** asks again | Prior AI or your own key |
| Task suggestions | The new task composer | Suggests a project, an assignee, a priority and a duration while you type. **Prefill** asks at once | Prior AI (Pro) |
| Duration estimates | **Settings → Planning**, **Estimate with Prior AI** | Estimates how long new tasks take, so [time blocking](https://priortasks.com/docs/planning/time-blocking/) can place them. Your own estimate always wins | Prior AI (Pro) |
| Email to task | **Inbox**, with Gmail connected | **Draft with Prior AI** turns an email into one task with a title, due date and priority | Prior AI or your own key |
| Calendar event draft | The event editor | **Draft with AI** turns a sentence such as "Yoga every Tuesday at 10:00 until December" into an event | Prior AI or your own key |
| Organise an import | **Settings → Import** | **Organise with Prior AI** reads free text and unknown files, and spots priorities and dates written in words: [import your data](https://priortasks.com/docs/getting-started/import-your-data/) | Prior AI (Pro) |
| Flashcards from a course | **Flashcards → Create from a course** | Writes the cards from a PDF, text or note | Prior AI or your own key |
| Flashcard tutor | **Ask Prior AI** on a card | **Explain**, **Mnemonic** or **Example** for one card, in at most 120 words | Prior AI or your own key |
| Budget quotes | A project's Budget tab | **Read with Prior AI** turns a pasted quote, invoice or receipt into budget lines | Prior AI (Pro) |
| Splitting a story | [Planning Poker](https://priortasks.com/docs/agile/planning-poker/) | When a story is estimated above 13 points, proposes smaller tasks | Prior AI (Pro) |
| Dictation | The microphone in the assistant | Turns your voice into text, up to two minutes | Prior AI or your own OpenAI key |

"Prior AI" means a paid plan, as [plans and pricing](https://priortasks.com/docs/account/plans-and-pricing/) explains. "Your own key" means an OpenRouter key saved in settings: see [Use your own AI key](https://priortasks.com/docs/prior-ai/bring-your-own-key/). Features marked Pro stay on Prior AI even if you saved your own key, so a key does not give you access to them.

## What runs by itself

Most of the list runs only when you click or type into it. Three things run without a click, for accounts that have Prior AI:

- **AI plan for today** is prepared when you open Today. It is kept, and asked for again only when your plan changes, at most every 10 minutes.
- **Duration estimates** run once for each new or edited task while **Estimate with Prior AI** is on. It is on by default and you can turn it off in **Settings → Planning**.
- **Task suggestions** run while you type a new task, after a short pause.

With only your own key, the AI plan for today still prepares itself. Without any key or plan, none of these run.

## Good to know

- **Without AI, you still get a draft.** If no AI is available, **Draft with Prior AI** on an email falls back to a plain reading of the subject and the text.
- **Each use has its own limit.** See [Limits of Prior AI](https://priortasks.com/docs/prior-ai/ai-limits/).
- **Your tasks are the input.** For what each feature sends, see [Prior AI and your privacy](https://priortasks.com/docs/prior-ai/ai-and-privacy/).
