# Add milestones to a project

> Mark checkpoints on the way to a project's end, attach tasks to each one and watch the bar fill as those tasks are completed.

A milestone is a checkpoint on the way to a project's end, such as "Beta ready" or "Go live". It has a name, an optional target date and the tasks that belong to it. Its progress is the share of those tasks that are done.

Milestones belong to **Agile** projects (Kanban, Scrum or Scrumban). A **Standard** project does not show them. To use milestones in a Standard project, change its type in **Edit project**: every task is kept.

## Create a milestone

1. Open an Agile project and go to the **Overview** tab.
2. In the **Milestones** panel, press **New milestone**.
3. Type a **Milestone name**, for example "Beta release".
4. Pick a **Target date** if there is one, and add a **Description** if it helps.
5. Tick the tasks that belong to it. The box **Find project issues** filters the list, and a line counts how many are in the milestone.
6. Press **Save changes**.

## Put a task in a milestone

You can also work from a task. Open the task, go to **Sub-tasks and dependencies** and choose a **Milestone**. The field shows once the project has at least one milestone. A card on the board then shows a flag with the milestone's name.

A task has one milestone at most. A milestone only makes sense inside its project, so moving a task to another project clears it.

## Read the progress

Each row of the **Milestones** panel shows the name, the target date (**due** followed by the date), the tasks done out of the total, a bar and a percentage. When every task of the milestone is done, the row shows a check and **Complete**. A milestone with no tasks reads **No issues yet**.

Press a row to edit the milestone.

## Change or delete a milestone

Open the milestone and edit its name, date, description or tasks, then press **Save changes**. **Delete milestone** asks you to confirm and removes only the milestone: its tasks stay in the project.

## Good to know

- The target date is a label. It does not create a task or an event in the [calendar](https://priortasks.com/docs/planning/calendar/).
- Viewers of a shared project see milestones but cannot change them. Editors can.
- [Project templates](https://priortasks.com/docs/projects/project-templates/) for Agile projects come with milestones already set.
- Prior AI and connected assistants can add milestones to a project too. See [AI across Prior](https://priortasks.com/docs/prior-ai/ai-across-prior/).
