# Set a project's status and health

> Mark a project planned, active, paused or completed, flag how it is going, and see what each choice changes across Prior.

Every project has a **status** that says where it is in its life, and optionally a **health** that says how it is going. You set both by hand: Prior never changes them for you, and finishing the last task does not complete the project.

## Status

The four statuses are **Planned**, **Active**, **Paused** and **Completed**. A new project starts as Active.

Change it from:

- the status menu in the project's header (a coloured chip);
- the **•••** menu of a project's card on the Projects page: **Mark as planned**, **Mark as active**, **Pause the project** or **Mark as completed**.

### What a status changes

| Where | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| Projects page | The status buttons filter by it. Completed projects fold into **Completed (n)** at the end of their area. |
| Task composer | Completed projects no longer appear in the project list. |
| [Weekly review](https://priortasks.com/docs/planning/weekly-review/) | Only Active and Planned projects are checked for a missing next action. |
| All tasks board | Grouped by project, a completed project gets a column only if it still holds tasks. |

Tasks are never touched: pausing or completing a project leaves them as they are.

## Health

Health has three values: **On track**, **At risk** and **Off track**. It is empty until you set it (**Not set**). It shows as **Health** in the summary strip of the project page, in green, amber or red, and in the Overview of an Agile project.

Open the project, press **Edit project** and use the **Project health** field. Prior does not compute health from your tasks or dates, so it says what you decide.

A health set by a template, by Prior AI or by a connected assistant shows the same way, and you can change it there.

## Start and target dates

The same dialog has a **Start date** and a **Target date**. The target date must be on or after the start date, or Prior asks you to fix it. The summary strip shows it as **Due date** with the days left, in red once it has passed on a project that is not completed. On the Projects page the card shows the same date.

## Good to know

- Viewers of a shared project cannot change status or health.
- Templates set a start date and a target date for you. See [Start a project from a template](https://priortasks.com/docs/projects/project-templates/).
