Flag, bury, suspend and study off-schedule

Mark cards with colors, hide one for a day or until you bring it back, and study ahead, cram or redo forgotten cards without disturbing the schedule.

Some cards need a mark, a pause or a closer look. These tools do that without changing how the rest of your deck is scheduled.

Flag a card

A flag is a colored mark for you: cards to rewrite, cards to ask someone about. There are seven, numbered 1 to 7: Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Pink, Turquoise and Purple.

  • During a review: open the More button (⋯) and pick a color, or press Cmd+1 to 7 (Ctrl on Windows and Linux). Press the same key again to remove the flag. A flagged card shows a thin edge in its color.
  • In the card browser: select cards, choose Flag, then a color or No flag.
  • To find them: search flag:3. See Search, sort and edit cards.

A flag belongs to one card. The two cards of a reversed note are flagged separately. A flag does not change when the card comes back.

Bury a card

Burying hides a card until tomorrow. Use it for a card you saw a moment ago elsewhere, or one you cannot face today. Tomorrow it comes back as if nothing happened, and its schedule has not changed.

During a review, choose Bury until tomorrow in the More menu or press -. An Undo button shows for a few seconds. In the card browser, select cards and choose Bury, or Unbury to bring them back. A day starts at 4:00 in the morning.

Suspend a card

Suspending keeps a card out of every session until you bring it back. Use it for a card that is wrong, or that you want to stop seeing for good.

  • During a review: Suspend in the More menu, or @.
  • In a deck: the menu at the end of a row in Cards has Suspend and Unsuspend. It acts on every card of the note.
  • In the browser: Suspend and Unsuspend.
  • In Stats: the Leeches list has a Suspend button for cards you keep forgetting.

The same row menu has Reset to new, which sends a card back to the start, as if you had never answered it.

Study off-schedule with Custom study

Custom study makes a session outside the daily queue. Open it from More in a deck, Custom study, or from the search icon on the Flashcards page to study every deck. When nothing is due, Study ahead on the Flashcards page opens it on Review ahead.

Pick one of five choices. The sheet shows how many cards match, then Start.

ChoiceCardsCounts as a review
Review forgotten cardsAnswered Again in the last days you set (7 by default)Yes
Review aheadDue in the next days you set (3 by default)Yes
Study by tagCards with the tag you pick, and its child tagsYes
Preview new cardsThe next new cards, 20 by defaultNo
Cram everythingEvery card of the deck, in random orderNo

The numbers you set, days or cards, go from 1 to 365. A session covers the deck and its subdecks.

In the three choices that count, your answers are real reviews and change the schedule. A card you answer Again comes back at the end of the session. Preview new cards and Cram everything only show the cards, with Show answer and Next. Nothing is recorded, so you can look at cards again and again without affecting when they are due.

Good to know

  • Suspended cards never appear in a session, custom study included. Buried cards appear only in Preview new cards and Cram everything.
  • A custom session lives only on your screen. If you reload the page, you are back to the daily queue.
