Fold content and find your way in a long note

Hide detail in toggles, set a point apart in a callout, list headings with a table of contents and jump between sections from the outline.

Long notes stay readable when detail is folded away and every section is one click from the outline.

Fold content in a toggle

A toggle is a title that unfolds to show its content.

  1. Choose Toggle in the bar above the note, or type / and pick Toggle.
  2. Type the title where the caret is.
  3. Press Enter and write the content on the following lines.

In Markdown, a toggle is a quote whose first line is > [!toggle] followed by the title:

> [!toggle] Meeting recording
> Link to the recording
> Transcript available on request

Click the title to open or close it. Whether a toggle is open is not saved with the note: it starts closed each time the note is shown.

Set a point apart in a callout

A callout is a colored box with an optional title. Choose Callout, Tip or Warning, or type the marker yourself:

> [!warning] Deadline moved
> The review is now on Friday.

The word after ! sets the look. Prior knows these:

  • note, info, abstract, summary, todo: blue
  • tip, hint: green
  • important: the app's accent color
  • warning, caution, attention, question, help, faq: orange
  • danger, error, bug, failure, fail, missing: red
  • success, check, done: green

Any other word draws a plain box.

List the headings in the note

Type [toc] on a line of its own, or choose Table of contents in the slash menu. It lists the headings of the note and stays up to date as you write. With no heading yet it shows "Add headings and they will show here."

Jump around with the outline

Open the inspector with the Toggle inspector button in the note's toolbar. Its Outline section lists every heading, indented by level. Click one to scroll there. The heading you are reading, or typing in, is highlighted.

The same inspector shows the note's Backlinks, which are the notes that link to it with [[Note title]], and a small graph of linked notes. See Organize notes.

Good to know

  • Headings come from lines that start with # to ######. Lines inside a code block are not headings.
  • Toggles and callouts are plain Markdown quotes. An app that does not know them shows the quote lines as they are.
  • Toggles, callouts and [toc] work the same in shared notes. The inspector and its outline are only in personal notes.
