Set a habit's schedule
Make a habit repeat every day, on chosen weekdays, every few days or weeks, or monthly, with a start date, an optional end and a time.
A habit's schedule says which days it is due. You set it in the habit's dialog, with three choices of frequency and three dates.
Choose a frequency
| Choice | What it does |
|---|---|
| Daily | Due every day. |
| Specific days | Due every week on the days you tap. |
| Custom | Due every so many days, weeks, months or years. |
Specific days. Tap the days, or use a shortcut: Weekdays (Monday to Friday), Weekend or Every day. If you pick nothing, Prior starts with the weekday of the start date.
Custom. Type a number after Repeat every (1 to 365) and choose the Period: Day, Week, Month or Year. "Every 3 days" counts from the start date. With Week, you can also pick On these days, and "Every 2 weeks" then counts weeks from the week of the start date.
A habit that repeats monthly or yearly keeps the day of its start date. If a month has no such day, the habit falls on the last day of that month: a habit starting on the 31st is due on the 30th in April and on the 28th or 29th in February.
Set the dates
- Starts: the first day the habit can be due. It is also the anchor for "every N days", "every N weeks", months and years. Pick a past date to backfill earlier days.
- Ends (optional): after it, the habit shows Ended and stops counting. It must be on or after the start date.
- Time (optional): press Add time in the Starts field. It sets when the habit is due during the day. Prior uses it for reminders, for the habit's place on Today's timeline and in the calendar.
How the schedule reads
Prior writes the schedule on each habit in plain words, in your language: Every day, Every Monday and Wednesday, Every 2 weeks · Friday. The Habits page groups habits as Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Custom.
Change a schedule
Open the habit with its pencil button and change the frequency or the dates. Your earlier check-ins are kept: they stay on the days where you made them. Days that were scheduled before and are not any more no longer count as missed.
Good to know
- Streaks follow the schedule: a habit due on Mondays and Wednesdays is not broken by Tuesday.
- A habit with a time can remind you on each scheduled day you have not checked in yet. See Notifications.
