Organize notes in folders and find them again

Group notes in folders with colors, mark favorites, search titles and text, follow #tags and links, and keep several notes open in tabs.

Your personal notes live in the Library, a tree of folders and notes. This page covers the library on a computer or tablet. On a phone it works the same way, with the list and the note taking turns.

Create folders

  1. Choose the + next to Library (New folder). Or right-click an empty part of the library and choose New folder here.
  2. Type a Name and, if you like, pick a Color: Clay, Amber, Honey, Sage, Ocean, Plum, Rose or Stone.
  3. Choose Create folder.

Right-click a folder for New note here, New subfolder here, Move folder to…, Rename, Set color and Delete folder. Folders can hold other folders. Deleting a folder does not delete what is inside: its notes and subfolders move up one level.

Your areas and projects also appear in the library: a folder for each area, and a folder for each project (inside its area's folder when it has one). Their names follow the area or project, and from Notes you can only add a note to them.

Move, favorite and delete notes

  • Move: right-click a note and choose Move to…, or open More actions in the note's toolbar. Pick a folder, or Library for the top level. Notes cannot be dragged between folders. A note moved into the folder of a project also joins that project's Notes tab; moved elsewhere, it stays linked to its project.
  • Favorites: choose the star in the toolbar (Add to favorites). The Favorites filter above the tree shows only those notes. All shows everything.
  • Delete: right-click a note and choose Delete note, or use More actions. Prior asks you to confirm, and the note goes to the trash. Trash, at the bottom of the library, lists your deleted notes: Restore brings one back where it was.

Type in Search notes at the top of the library. Prior looks in titles and in the text, ignoring capitals, and hides folders with no match. Press / anywhere on the Notes page, outside a text field, to jump to the search box, and Esc to clear it.

The command palette (Cmd+K or Ctrl+K) also opens a note by its title.

  • Write #tag anywhere in a note. The tags of the note appear under its title. Click one to search the library for it.
  • Write [[Note title]] to link to another note. Click the link to open it. If no note has that title, Prior creates it.
  • In the inspector (Toggle inspector), Backlinks lists the notes that link to this one. Local graph draws the notes connected to it. The graph button (Graph view) at the top of the library opens a larger one, where you can click a note to open it.

Keep several notes open

Each note you open gets a tab above it. Close a tab with its × or a middle click, and open a new note with the + at the end of the tab bar. Collapse library hides the tree to give the note more room.

Your open tabs, your folded folders and the state of the library are remembered and follow you to your other devices.
