Prior AI and your privacy
What Prior sends to an AI provider and when, who receives it, what Prior keeps of your conversations, and the settings that limit it.
Prior sends your content to an AI provider only when an AI feature runs. This page says which ones, what leaves, who receives it and what you control. The legal text is in the privacy policy: see Privacy and security.
When something is sent
An AI feature runs when you use it: you ask the assistant, click Draft with Prior AI, or start a dictation. Three features also run without a click: the AI plan for today, duration estimates and task suggestions while you type. Where Prior AI helps across the app lists them all.
With no paid plan and no key of your own, no AI feature runs and nothing is sent.
What is sent
Only what the request needs.
| Feature | What goes |
|---|---|
| Assistant | Your message, the last 8 messages of the chat, a slice of your workspace (see limits), and the page you have open if the chip is on |
| AI plan for today | Your most pressing open tasks, the tasks you are waiting on, and today's and tomorrow's events |
| Task suggestions | The title you type, the first 240 characters of the description, the names of up to 25 projects with a few recent task titles each, and the members of the project |
| Duration estimates | A task's title, the first 240 characters of its description and up to 12 checklist steps |
| Other drafts | The email, the sentence, the files, the course text or the quote you chose to send |
| Dictation | The recording, which Prior does not keep |
Who receives it
- Prior AI. Claude, from Anthropic, writes the text. If it fails, the request goes to OpenRouter. OpenRouter also serves the small decision model behind the AI plan for today, the estimates and the task suggestions, and the transcription of dictation. OpenRouter passes each request to an inference provider of the model used, which can be outside the European Union.
- Your own key. The provider you chose, under your own account and its terms. When you are signed in, Prior's server relays the request.
- Codex. Your ChatGPT account, from your computer.
The full list of providers is in the privacy policy.
What Prior does with it
- Email addresses are replaced. When a request goes through Prior's server, every email address in it becomes a placeholder before it is passed to the provider. Names and anything else you wrote stay in, so leave out what you do not want to share.
- No training. Prior does not use your content to train AI models. Providers process requests under their API terms, which can include limited retention, for example to detect abuse.
- Conversations are saved to your account so that Chat history follows you across devices. Only you can read them: collaborators of a shared project cannot. They are part of your data export and are deleted with your account. There is no button to delete a single conversation.
- Usage is counted, not the content. For each day and each kind of use, Prior keeps the number of requests, the tokens and the cost, to apply your plan's allowance.
Shared projects
Your workspace includes the tasks of shared projects you belong to, so they can be part of what you send when you use the assistant, exactly as far as you can see them. Your collaborators do not see your questions or the answers.
What you control
- Choose the provider under Settings → Prior AI → AI provider. With My OpenRouter key or Codex (desktop), requests go to the provider you picked and not to Prior AI.
- Turn off duration estimates with Estimate with Prior AI in Settings → Planning.
- Leave a page out with the × on the chip above the composer: see Choose the page Prior AI reads.
- Review before anything is saved. Nothing the assistant proposes is created or changed until you apply it.
- There is no setting for the AI plan for today or for task suggestions. They run only on accounts that have Prior AI, and the plan for today also with your own key.
Good to know
- Your own key does not make it fully private. If it stops working and your account has Prior AI, the assistant tries once more with Prior AI, so the message can reach Prior's providers.
- Assistants you connect yourself are separate. When Claude, ChatGPT or another app reads your Prior through MCP, that app's provider receives what it reads, under its own terms. See Keep your connection safe.
- Answers can be wrong. They are proposals. Check dates, amounts and names.
