Limits of Prior AI
How many assistant tokens each plan includes, what counts against them, the daily cap, and what the assistant sees of a large workspace.
Prior AI has three kinds of limit: a monthly token allowance for the assistant, a daily cap on requests, and a size limit on what the assistant reads in one message. Your own key is not counted against the allowance or the cap: your provider sets its own limits.
Monthly allowance for the assistant
| Plan | Assistant tokens per month |
|---|---|
| Free | None. Use your own key |
| Pro | 2 million |
| Team | 4 million for each seat |
| Enterprise | 30 million |
A token is a small piece of a word, roughly three quarters of a word in English. Each message counts the question, the answer and the part of your workspace sent along with it, so a message costs more when your workspace is large or the conversation is long.
The month runs from the first to the last day, in UTC time. To see where you are, open Settings → Subscription: Usage and limits shows Assistant tokens this month, as "used of limit", with the date it resets.
Only the assistant chat counts. The AI plan for today, email and calendar drafts, AI import, flashcards, budget quotes, dictation and the rest do not use tokens.
When you run out
The assistant pauses until the first day of next month. The other Prior AI features keep working. To keep using the assistant before then, switch AI provider to your own OpenRouter key in Settings → Prior AI, or move to a plan with a larger allowance. A change of plan is prorated; see Manage your subscription.
Daily cap
All Prior AI requests of an account share a safety cap of 300 a day, counted from midnight UTC. Task suggestions in the composer have a separate cap of 600 a day. Normal use stays far below these. When you reach the cap, Prior says the daily limit is reached and asks you to try again tomorrow, or to add your own key.
Messages are also rate limited by the minute. If you send many in a row, wait a minute.
What the assistant reads
The assistant gets a slice of your workspace with each message, not all of it:
| What | How much |
|---|---|
| Open tasks | Up to 60 |
| Recently completed tasks | The last 14 days, up to 20 |
| Areas, projects, habits, folders and notes | Up to 30 of each |
| Calendar events | The next 7 days, up to 25 events |
| Earlier messages in the chat | The last 8, word for word, plus a short summary of the rest |
| The open note | Up to 12,000 characters |
| A selected passage | Up to 4,000 characters |
| Your message | About 20,000 characters |
If your workspace is very large, the assistant gets less of the list to stay within its total size. When you want it to work on something specific, name it, or open the page and keep the chip on: see Choose the page Prior AI reads.
A flashcards request in the chat is limited to about 30 cards a time. For a whole course use Create from a course in Flashcards, which handles long texts.
Limits of one feature
- Flashcards from a course read the text in chunks of 24,000 characters.
- Dictation stops at two minutes.
- AI import, budget quotes and splitting a story need Pro: see Where Prior AI helps across the app.
Good to know
- Free trial. A Pro or Team trial includes Prior AI with the plan's allowance. See Free trial.
- Cancelling. When a plan ends you return to Free: Prior AI stops, and your data stays.
