Organize work with areas and projects
Group tasks into projects and projects into areas, then find any project on one searchable page and keep finished ones out of the way.
Prior sorts work on three levels. An area is a part of your life or job that never ends, like Work or Studies. A project is an outcome with a finish line, like "Launch the website". A task is one thing to do.
You do not have to use every level. A task can sit in a project, in an area, or on its own. Start with tasks, add projects when a goal needs several steps, and add areas when you have enough projects to want them grouped.
The Projects page
Open Projects in the sidebar, or press G then P. Projects appear as cards, grouped by area.

Each card shows the project's icon and name, its type (Standard, Kanban, Scrum or Scrumban), the tasks done out of the total with a progress bar, its status, a date and, in a shared project, the members. The date is the project's target date, or else the earliest due date among its open tasks. It turns red when it is in the past.
- Filter by status with All, Active, Planned, Paused or Completed. Each button shows how many projects it holds.
- Search with the box labelled Search a project. It looks in names, descriptions and area names.
- Sort by Manual order, Name, Due date or Progress. The sort button appears once you have two projects. In Manual order, drag a card onto another, or use Move earlier and Move later in its ••• menu, to place it within its area.
- Fold an area by clicking its name. Prior remembers what you folded, and how you sorted, on this device.
- Completed projects wait in a folded Completed (n) row at the end of their area while the filter is on All.
Each area ends with a dashed New project in <name> card. Projects with no area sit in a No area group after the last area.
Create and change areas
- Press New area.
- Type a name and pick an icon.
- Press Create area.
Prior gives the area a colour of its own. Use the ••• button on an area for New project in <name>, Edit <name> area and Delete <name> area. Deleting an area keeps its projects: they move to No area, and an Undo toast stays on screen for a few seconds.
Move a project to another area
Open the ••• menu of the project's card, choose Move to area… and pick the area. You can also change it when you edit the project.
Good to know
- Areas belong to your account. A project shared with you appears under No area on your Projects page.
- Press Pin to sidebar in a project's ••• menu to keep it one click away. The command palette has the same action.
- Deleting a project removes the project but keeps its tasks: they stay in All tasks. See Undo and delete.
