Get help and send your logs

Write to support with what you did and what you saw, and attach the diagnostic log from Settings → Diagnostics. Here is what it holds and how to send it.

In the app, the question mark next to your name opens Help: Help with this page opens the article about the page you are on, and Contact support opens the contact page. On a phone, Help center and Contact support are in More. You can also write to contact@priortasks.com, or use the contact page. A good message gets a fast answer, and the log from your device often shows the cause.

What to include

  • What you did and what you expected, then what happened instead, in a few lines.
  • Where: web, Windows, macOS, Linux or Android, and the system version.
  • Which version of Prior. Open Settings → General: the Version row shows it ("Prior {version}" in the apps, the latest release on the web).
  • When, with the time zone, so the message can be matched to your log.
  • A screenshot of what you see, when it helps.
  • The log, if the problem is about sync, a crash or something that does nothing.

Never send your password, a two-step code or a recovery code.

Get the log from Settings → Diagnostics

Settings → Diagnostics is the troubleshooting page. It has two parts.

Sync shows Sync state: "Last sync revision: {number} · Pending mutations: {number}". The second number is how many task and habit changes are still waiting to go to the server. Quote both in your message.

Logs is the application log of this device. Under Application log you can:

  • Download latest.log: saves the log as a text file you can attach to an email.
  • Copy logs: copies the same text to the clipboard, so you can paste it into an email. The button reads "Copied!" when it has worked.
  • Show recent logs (with the number of entries) to read the latest 50 lines on screen, and Hide logs to close them.
  • Clear logs to empty the log. Do this only after you have sent it.

What the log contains

It is plain text. It starts with the date, the platform (desktop or web) and your browser or system identification. Then, line by line: the time, a level (INFO, WARN or ERROR), a category such as SYNC or CONSOLE, and the message, with the details of an error when there are some. Prior keeps up to 1,000 recent lines in memory and the latest 200 for the next launch.

It records what the app did and the errors it met: starts, sync cycles and their failures, API errors. It is not a copy of your tasks. It can still quote a title or a name when an error message does. Open the file, read it, and remove anything you would rather keep private before you send it.

Crash reports are separate

When something breaks, Prior can send a short technical report to an error tracker that it hosts itself: the error, where it happened, the version and the system, never your tasks, notes, email or anything you type. It is on by default. You can turn it off with Send anonymous crash reports in Settings → General, under Privacy, and the choice follows your account. These reports help fix bugs. They do not reach support as a message, so they do not replace writing to it.

Good to know

  • Write from the email address of your Prior account, or include it, so support can find you.
  • If the problem is a payment, give the date, the amount and the last four digits of the card. See Fix a payment problem.
  • To suggest a feature, write to the same address.
