Run your weekly review

Look back at your week, clear what is overdue or stale, give every project a next step and pick up to three priorities for next week.

The weekly review is a five-step guided session of about five minutes. It celebrates the week, clears what has gone stale, gives each project a next step and sets next week's focus. It works offline and uses no AI. For the method behind it, read the weekly review guide.

Start it

  • A Weekly review card appears on Today from Friday 2 pm through the weekend. Press Start the review, or Not this week to hide the card until next week.
  • At any time, search Weekly review in the command palette (Cmd+K, or Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux).

The five steps

  1. Wins. The tasks you completed over the last seven days with a bar for each day, your focus time, habit check-ins, the habits on a streak of two or more in a row, and the projects where most got done.
  2. Overdue and stale. Overdue tasks, then tasks you have not touched in two weeks. For each, choose Move to a new date, Someday, or Delete. A stale task also has Still relevant, which refreshes it.
  3. Projects without a next action. Every Active or Planned project that has no open task ready to start. Open the project, or type its next action and press Add.
  4. Next week. Tasks due next week, then the best-ranked open tasks. Pick up to three priorities.
  5. Done. A summary of what you did, cleaned up and picked.

Finishing plans your picks for next week's first working day, with one Undo.

What each choice does

  • Someday clears every date on the task and parks it in the Backlog, so it leaves your lists until you pick it up again.
  • Delete waits for the usual Undo window before the task is removed. See Undo and delete.
  • A project's next action is an open task that is not in the Backlog and not Waiting. Tasks you add here are created in that project with status Todo.
  • The picks are planned, not due: Prior sets their planned day to next week's first working day and no time, so they lead Today that morning. Their due dates do not change.

The lists are captured when the review opens, so the rows you decide on stay in place with their outcome.

Turn it off

In Settings → Planning → Rituals, switch off Weekly review reminder to stop the card. The command-palette entry keeps working.

Good to know

  • The review counts your own tasks. Tasks assigned to someone else are left out.
  • Focus time comes from the timer on this device.
  • After you finish or skip, the card stays away until the next week.
