Get a reminder for a task
Set a reminder on a task to get a notification at the time you choose. How it works on Android, desktop and the web, with quiet hours and the limits.
A reminder is a notification at an exact time. Prior has no push server: each of your devices schedules its own notifications from the data it holds, so reminders do not need a connection.
Set a reminder
- In the new task sheet or the edit sheet, open the + menu and choose Reminder, or use the Reminder field of the side panel.
- Pick a time from the list:
| Choice | When it fires |
|---|---|
| At due time | At the due time. At 09:00 when the task has a date but no time. |
| 10 min before and 1 hour before | Before the due time. Offered when the task has a time. |
| The morning of | At 09:00 on the due day. Offered when the task is due later that day. |
| In 1 hour | One hour from now. |
| Tomorrow morning | At 09:00 tomorrow. |
| Custom… | A date and time you choose. |
Choices that are already in the past are hidden. Choose No reminder to remove it. The first time you set one, Prior asks for permission to send notifications.
You can also type it: "Call Sam tomorrow 3pm remind me" sets a reminder at the due time, at 09:00 on the due day when there is no time, or in an hour when there is no date. See Create a task.
How it reaches you
Android
Reminders fire even when Prior is closed, and they survive a restart. Allow notifications when Android asks (Android 13 and later).
Desktop
Reminders appear while Prior is running, even in the background. If Prior is not running at that time, nothing shows.
Web
Reminders appear while the Prior tab is open.
Click or tap a notification to open the task.
Settings
Open Settings → Notifications. These settings belong to the device, because the permission does too.
- Reminders turns every Prior notification on this device on or off.
- Habit reminders reminds you of a habit at its time on days you have not checked it. See Create a habit.
- Quiet hours holds reminders that fall inside the window until it ends. It starts at 22:00 to 07:00 when you turn it on, and you can change both times.
- Send a test checks that notifications reach this device.
If notifications are blocked, Prior says so. Allow them for Prior in your system or browser settings.
Good to know
- Prior looks seven days ahead and schedules at most 64 reminders at a time. Open the app now and then so later reminders get scheduled.
- On desktop and web, a reminder that passed while Prior was not running does not show afterwards.
- A completed or deleted task does not remind you.
- A reminder is an exact moment, so it does not move if you change time zone.
- Rescheduling a task from its menu moves its reminder by the same number of days. A repeating task gives its next occurrence a reminder shifted the same way. See Recurring tasks.
- Every signed-in device notifies you. If you do not want a reminder on your computer, switch Reminders off there.
- If a reminder does not arrive, see Reminders not firing.
